Sparkling with Couture Jewelry

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Chanel plume broochFashion is not just about clothing and shoes and bag, as we all know there’s one that always sparkling in fashion, and that is jewelry! We can put on ordinary clothes, pale shoes and bags, then we put on just one piece of fine jewelry, we’re ready, even for a fancy party!

So you know how important jewelry is to us?

Couture week closed out in a blaze of multicolored carats that had editors scurrying from the Place Vendôme to Avenue Montaigne and back again. Not only does the new haute joaillerie day extend the ever-shrinking week by a day, it provided the big houses with a forum to preview their lavish creations for the 25th Biennale des Antiquaires, opening in Paris mid-September. This season, flora and fauna ran rampant.

Chanel dove into its archives and surfaced with a feather theme, anchored by the articulated brooch Diane Kruger wore in her hair at Cannes (pictured); it’s an exact replica of one created by Mlle. Chanel in 1932. An articulated cuff of pavé diamond feathers was trimmed in black diamonds and set with a hidden closure. The feathery wisps were echoed elsewhere, too, as with the Comet necklace, which drapes diamonds around the nape of the neck.

Boucheron took the feather theme literally for one of its unique suites, called Pretty Puff, in which multicolored diamonds were sprinkled over a puffball of white swan feathers. And since versatility is a coveted attribute in haute jewelry (necklace, with or without heavily jeweled brooch, for example), the house pushed the concept to the extreme with the Curlicue five-in-one concept that by turns could be a necklace, two bracelets, a diamond hair clip, or a brooch.

At Dior, a panorama of jewels spanned the classically beautiful—significant Les Précieuses engagement rings and the new Rose Dior Bagatelle rings covered with rubies or pink sapphires—to the more far-out, with one-of-a-kind items from Victoire de Castellane’s wild Coffret de Victoire. One cuff sets a pink tourmaline rabbit in a garden of fire-opal pumpkins; on another, a burnished silver monkey can be lifted from his bejeweled perch. Bollywood earrings, twined with serpents, hang over the ear, as they’re worn in India.

Van Cleef & Arpels drew inspiration from Jules Verne for its Les Voyages Extraordinaires collection, shown at a presentation staged by Argentinean theater director Alfredo Arias. The travels spanned oceans and terra firma. Over here, diamond-encrusted polar bears and penguins swanned on hefty tourmaline glaciers; there, an elephant head paved in gray and white diamonds, dangling a 41-carat topaz, stood in for the African leg of the jaunt. Several pieces were customizable: A whale brooch could spout a jet of diamonds, thanks to integrated springs—now you see it, now you don’t. And if, after all the creatures, you didn’t care for the menagerie, well, there were always the classical constellations—Calliope and Andromeda, re-created to scale.

Flora is sweet, nice, and fauna is really adorable and cute, this season’s really fun! And I love the Chanel “feather”!

YSL to Cruise in New York City

YSL to Show Its Cruise CollectionLike we said before, history is something now works at fashion, so almost every fashion house is now finding their own way to play the history card well. So why should YSL to be an exception? Here comes the news that actually the fashion house has already decided to show its cruise collection right in New York.

We received an unexpected Save the Date yesterday. What for? Yves Saint Laurent’s cruise collection, set to debut June 3 in New York City at the Consulate General of France.

After Chanel’s trip to St. Tropez and Dior’s visit to Shanghai, it’s no surprise Stefano Pilati and co. have chosen an alternative location, even if it’s a tad less exotic. Of course, we’re thrilled that’s it’s our city.

Now, it may be Cruise, but we’re still betting on lots of black from Pilati. And considering about 80% of our collective wardrobes are comprised of the non-color, that’s a good thing.

Well, anyway, as we always love YSL, let’s just wait and see how this history card was played at YSL, and also get ready for some surprises too!

Mirrors on Head

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

mirror hair pieceRecently, hair is one big part of our style, and girls never walk out without a nice hairstyle. Hair ornaments as a result becomes some very important accessories we tend to wear when we go out. As time passes, and as fashion goes, cute little conventional hair pieces just seem not enough for some fashion girls. Here is the story:

Last Thursday night, I hopped over to the release party of The Block Magazine’s fashion issue at Lower East Side boutique International Playground. Among the hoards of cool kids looking “I don’t care” chic, I noticed one girl sporting a giant mirror on her head.

To my very own surprise, my first reaction was to love it. She kept the rest of the all-black outfit perfectly simple, and her classic makeup combination of black liquid liner and a red lip made her seem like a Jetsons-inspired pin-up girl.

Among the flocks of similarly dressed hipsters, her reflective accoutrement was a ray of light. Indeed, headpieces are having a moment, especially in recent years.

First, Tavi’s bow caused issues at Dior couture, then Hanneli sported some layered disks at NYFW, and Jean Charles de Castelbajac added antlers to his Bambi inspired collection.

And who could forget Abbey Lee’s feathered spread in Numéro #109? If there was ever a reason to be tar and feathered, I think this is it.

While the right headpiece can make a look truly fantastic, the general populous still thinks it’s more freak than chic. Personally, I’d love an arty topper, like one of Benoit Missolin’s gorgeous headbands, but I’d probably still feel a tingle of self-consciousness leaving the house.

Well, then comes the question: What would you do?

I really don’t know, I’d love cute bows and blinged little ornaments, but a huge mirror? Or some exaggerated feather? I might still need some time and courage to take action on myself.

“Kate Moss Myth” Failed to Debut

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Kate Moss MythKate Moss, the goddess who rocks everywhere in fashion, and she obviously sells everything! However now we finally find the one thing Kate Moss can’t sell, sadly it’s herself, the “Kate Moss Myth” exhibition unexpectedly failed to debut.

Here’s the thing: Les Arts Décoratifs has officially canceled their Kate Moss exhibition. The “Kate Moss Myth” was supposed to go up this year, then it was postponed until next March, and now they’re doing away with it altogether.

Despite the fashion world’s love of all things Kate, the non profit museum’s had a hell of a time finding a corporate sponsor for the exhibition.

A spokeswoman told WWD that “Cultural patronage is not a priority for companies,” but given the wide range of companies Kate’s worked for, from Nikon to Chanel, Virgin Mobil to Dior and the heaps of money each and every one has made off of the supermodel, we’re surprised no one’s stepped up to attach their name to the exhibition.

We’ve discussed about this and found something we thought was the reason why this exhibition failed to open. It is, we’ll admit, a bit early to host anything called the “Kate Moss Myth”, or take a look back at her ‘long’ career—she’s only 36–and we wonder what exactly they’d put on display. But when a museum wants to present the entire contents of her closet in 20 years, we bet companies will fight for involvement.

Well, what’s your opinion about this? Why Kate Moss just can’t ’sell’ herself for now?

The French Actress Does Great For Christian Dior

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Marion Cotillard for Lady DiorFrench beauty with a background scenery of eastern beauty, Christian Dior really knows how to make the most stunning ad campaign! This new ad campaign of Lady Dior is really shinning, and just too much to say, the beautiful women, the nice scenery, and that stunning bag, even the title ‘Lady Blue’ feels like blue and graceful.

I’m really happy to see that French actress Marion Cotillard is once again the face of Lady Dior, she’s really got the talent. The new “Lady Blue” campaign marks Cotillard’s third stint with the label. Cotillard has been taken to Shanghai in another dramatic encounter with a mysterious secret agent. In the backdrop is the city’s stunning skyline, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, photographed by Steven Klein, and I have to say the view is picture perfect. John Galliano chose the right woman for Lady Dior because she’s beautiful, yet there is a complexity about her that is very enchanting.

As before, Cotillard was also featured in a 12-minute film shot by David Lynch for the house that will debut on May 15th. “In the David Lynch film, Marion is reciting a poem that he wrote, and was inspired by the Pearl Tower itself,” John Galliano explained. “The words and building fuse in the picture he paints on-screen. Shanghai is such a vibrant and inspiring city.” Not so coincidentally, Galliano will also unveil Dior’s cruise collection in Shanghai on that same day.

This photo here really makes me hungry for the rest, and Galliano’s truly wise to chose this talented women as the face of Christian Dior Lady! It appears having an actress as your model really does pay off, she gives great face and good acting.

So wow Huh…No doubt it will be expensive for it’s a limited edition, still love it a lot! Maybe the perfect gift to Spring birds! Really fascinatingly exquisite!

Best Dressed of the decade

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

best dressedSince we all care about how do we look? And because we like to comment on celebrity styles, now Vogue’s tackling a major issue, who’s the best dressed of the decade?

They’ve selected the top ten looks from each of the past ten years and would like you to vote. After picking your favorite look from 2000, they’ll direct you to 2001, 2002 and so on; on January 25th they’ll announce the ten winners of the online poll and the winner with the most votes wins the title.

The slideshow’s a trip down fashion memory lane starting with Jennifer Lopez’s Versace and Renée Zellweger’s early Carolinas to Rihanna’s Dolce tux and Michelle Obama’s Alaia. Hilary Swank’s Oscar winning Guy Laroche pops up in ‘05 and Gwen Stefani in Dior from ‘04; Jennifer Connelly’s first Balenciaga outing and LSDs silver Ricci came in at opposite ends of ‘08 and you can trace Kate Moss’ transformation throughout the ten years.

We wish Gwyneth’s blush Zac Posen from 2007 and Stella McCartney’s lace jumpsuit from this year had made the list, but as for what’s on the list? Michelle Williams’ canary yellow Vera Wang from 06 might be our favorite.

So have you done your vote and who’s your favorite. Tell us your ideas of celebrity style!
